The whole of ‘Jyotish Shastra’ stands on the basis of the study of nine planets Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Common people don’t raise a question and take everything for granted. But a few inquisitive people ask “You are telling about planets, but the Sun is not a planet. It is a star. Why is it included among nine planets ?” Yes, the Sun is not a planet. It is a star. Let’s think of two words, ‘Astronomy’ and’ Astrology’. The Oxford dictionary of English defines these two terms as follows. Astronomy = Science of heavenly bodies like the Sun, the Moon etc. Astrology = Art of observing the positions of heavenly bodies like stars and planets and telling how they influence human affairs.
