sarp ka bhartiya sanskriti se ananya sanbandh hai. ek bar maharshi sushrut ne bhagvan dhanvantari se pucha - ‘he bhagvn! sarpon ki sankhya aur uske bhed bataen.’ vaidyaraj dhanvantari ne kaha ‘takshakadi sanp asankhya hain. ye sarp antriksh evan patal lok ke vasi hain, par prithvi par pae jane vale namdhari sarpon ke bhed assi prakar ke hain. bhartiya vanmay men vishadhar sarpon ki puja hoti hai.
