'kaise meri raksha karoge? manuke aisa puchne par matsya bola - ''thore hi dinon men ek bhayankar jal - plavan hoga, jo prajavarg ko nasht kar dega, usse main tumhari raksha karugan.' manune punah usse pucha- 'tumhari raksha kaise ho sakti hai?' usne kaha - 'jab tak ham chote rahte hain, tab hamare anek vinashak hote hain - bara matsya hi chote matsya ko kha jata hai.
abhi tum mujhe ek ghare men rakh do, jab usse barh jaun to ek gaddhe men rakh dena aur uske bad mujhe samudra men chor dena, tab mera koi vinash nahin kar sakega.'' manu ne aisa hi kiya aur ant men samudra men chore jane par vah matsya manuko jal plavan ka samay batakar tatha unko us din ek nav lekar taiyar rahne ka adesh dekar jal men vilin ho gaya. jal -plavan hone par manu nav men charh gaye. vah matsya ek singvale vishalkay mahamatsya ke rup men prakat hua. manune nav ki rassi uske sigan men bandh di. nav lekar vah mahamatsya uttaraparvat (himaly) ki or gaya. usne vahan nav ko ek vriksh se bandhne ka adesh diya aur kaha ki jal ke utrne par niche a jana. jal-plavan se sanpurn praja nasht ho gayi, keval manu bache rahe. jal ghatne par manu niche aye aur unhonne ghrit, dadhi adi se jal men hi havan kiya. ek varsh bad jal se ira namak ek kanya utpann hui. usne manuse kaha-'tum mujhse yagya karo, isse tumhen dhan, pashu tatha anya abhisht vastuen prapt hogi.' manune aisa hi kiya aur uske dvara yah sari praja utpann ki.
matsyavtar katha ka yahi ansh sabse prachin tatha mukhay he. manu katha men kisi bhi devtavishesh ki koi bhumika nahin hai. shatapathabrahman ke is akhyan ko hindi sahitya ke kavivar prasad ne apne advitiya mahakavya kamayni dvrara amar kar diya hai. shatapathabrahman ke bad yah katha vividh puranon tatha mahabharat (vanaparva a. 185) men prapt hoti hai. mahabharat men spasht kaha gaya hai ki yah matsya prajapti ya brahma ka rup tha. thik bhi hai, pralykalin jal se manav jati ke adi parvuj manuki raksha karke srishti ke ankuron ko surakshit rakhne ka prayas prajapti ke atirikt aur kaun kar sakta hai? aur jal-plavan ka purvagyan, atulit vistar se vivardhan tatha samudra men nauvahan adi atimanushik karya bhi savacharech davaiishakti pajra apti ke dvara hi sabhanv hain mahabharat men is katha ka jo rup hai, uske ansu ar chirini nadi ke tat par snan karte hue vaivasvat manuke hathon men ek chota-sa matsya a jata hai aur dintapurvak manu se apni raksha karne ki prarthana karta hai - bhagavan ! main ek chota sa matsya hun. mujhe (apni jati ke) balvan matsyon se barabar bhay bana rahta hai.
atah uttam vrat ka palan karne vale maharshi, ! ap usse meri raksha karen. matsya punah bola- main bhayke mahan samudra me dub raha 12 ap vishshe prayatn karke mujhe bachane ka kasht kare apke is upkar ke badle main pratyupkar karunga. matsya ki yah bat sunakar vaivasvat manuko bari daya ayi aur unhonne chandrama ki kirnon ke saman shvet rangvale us matsya ko utha liya. tadanantar pani se bahar lakar use matke men dal diya. vah matsya itni teji se barhne laga ki kramshah ghat, talab tatha nadi adi bhi uske liye chote par gaye. ant men manune use samudra men chor diya. vah mahamatsya apni lila se unke vahan karne yogya ho gaya. us samay us muskarat e haeu mahamatsyane muin se kaha- bhagavan hi krita raksha tvaya sarva visheshtah. para ptakalan tu yat karya tvaya tat shrayu tan mam॥ achirad bhagavan bhaummidan sthavrjangamam. sarvamev mahabhag pralyan vai gamishyati॥ trasanan sthavranan ch yachchedang yachch nengati. tasya sav rsya sampra aptah kalah parmdarunah॥ bhagavan ! apne vishesh manoyog ke sath sab prakar se meri raksha ki hai, ab apke lie jis karya ka avasar prapt hua hai, vah batata hun, suniye- bhagvan ! yah sara ka sara charachar parthiv jagat shighra hi nasht hone vala hai.
mahabhag ! sanpurn jagat ka pralay ho jayega. sanpurn jangam tatha sthavar padarthon men jo hil-dul sakte hai aur jo hilne-dulne vale nahin hain, un sabke liye atyant bhayankar samay a pahuncha hai. yah suchna dene ke pashchat us matsya ne manu se ek drirh nav banvane ke liye kaha aur bataya ki usmen majbut rassi lagi ho, ap sanpurn aushdhiyon ev n annon ke bijon ko lekar saptarshiyon ke sath us nav men baith jana. main ek singvale mahamatsya ke rup men aunga arai tamuhen sarukshit sthan par le jaunga. naushch karyitavya te drirha yuktavatarka. tatra saptarshibhiah sardhamaruhathe aa mahamune॥ agmishyamyahan shrringi vigyaeyasten taps॥ kalantar men aisa hi hua. us din sagar apni maryada bhang karke prithvi-mandal ko dubane laga. manuki nav praly-jal men tairne lagi. manu bhagvan matsya ka smaran karne lage. smaran karte hi shangri dhari bhagvan matsya vahan a pahunche. manune nav ki rassi unke sing men bandh di aur bhagvan matsya nav khinchne lage. ve navko himalay tak le gaye aur unhonne un rishiyon se parvatshikhar men nav ki rassi bandhne ke liye kaha - 'asmin himvtah shringeah navan badhint ma chiram.' iske pashchat bhagvan matsyane apna parichay dete un rishiyon se kaha- main prajapti brahma hun.
mujhse shreshth aur koi nahin hai. matsyarup men mainne manu tatha aplogon (saptarshign) ki raksha ki hai. kyonki manu hi (is pralay ke uprant) devta, asur tatha manvon ki srishti kargen. tapasya ke bal se manuki pratibha atyant viksit ho jayegi aur praja ki srishti karte samay inki buddhi moh ko prapt nahin hogi, sada jagruk rahegi- ahan prajaptirbrahma matparan nadhigamyate. matsyarupen yuyan ch mayasmanmokshita bhayat॥ manuna ch prajaah sarvaah sadve asurmanushaah. srashtavyaah sarvalokashch yachchengan yachch nengati॥ tapsa chapi tivanro pritbhasya bhavishyati. matprasadat prajasarge n ch mohan gamishyati॥ aisa kahakar bhagvan matsya kshanabhar men adrishya ho gaye aur manuji bhi tapasya karke srishtikarya men pravritt ho gaye. matsyapuran men yah katha sanpurn puran ki adhar-bhumi hai. matsyarupdhari bhagvan praly-kal men manuko jis puran ka updesh dete hain, vahi 'matsyapuran' nam se prasiddh hai.
shrimadbhagavat men yah katha aur adhik kramabaddharup men ayi hai. katha ka praranbh shrimadbhagvtmhapuran ke mukhay shrate a raja parikshitk e prashn s e hate a hai ki bhagvan vishnune matsya-jaise tuchch evan vigarhit prani ka rup kyon dharan kiya? shrishukdevji uttar date hai nki rajan ! yon to bhagvan sabke ekmatra prabhu hain, fir bhi go, brahman, devta, sadhu, ved, dharm tatha arth ki raksha ke lie ve sharir dharan kiya karte hain. goviprasursadhunan chandasampi cheshvarah. rakshamichchasn tanurdhatte dharmasyarth tathaiv hi॥ (shrimdbhagavat 8/24/5) mahabharat men prajapti ke matsyarup ka karan keval manu adi ki raksha hai, kintu shrimadbhagvtmhapuran men hayagriv daitya se vedon ke udvarka mahatvapurn karya bhi is avtar ke sath jura hai.
