mannat trayat iti mantrah, manan tran dharmano mantraah. man ko shakti pradan kar ke samast bhayon se raksha karne vale shabdon ko ‘mantra’ kahte hain. mana’shabd se man ko ekagra karna, ‘tra’ shabd se tran (raksha) karna jiska dharm hai, ve mantra kahe jate hain.

mantra hi samast jatkon ko mantrana pradan karta hai. mantra hi man ko samriddh evan shant banata hai. mantra ke abhimantran se kisi bhi vyakti, vastu, ya sthan ko surakshit rakha ja sakta hai. varnamala ke ‘a’ se le kar ‘ksha’ tak 50 aksharon ko matrika kaha gaya hai. matrika shabd ka arth mata, athva janni hota hai. atah samast vanmay ki yah janni hai. sansar ka vyavhar shabdon ke dvara hota hai. islie shabd shakti sarvopri mani gayi hai.

mantron ki 3 jatiyan mani gayi hain: purush, stri evan napunsak. jin mantron ke ant men vashat, ya fat ka upyog hota hai, ve purushsangyak hain. svaha, athva vaushat hone par strisangyak tatha hun evan namah ant vale mantra ko napusanksangyak mana gaya hai. vashikaran, uchchatan evan stanbhan men purush mantra, kshudra karm evan rogon ke nash ke lie strisangyak mantra evan abhichar men napunsak mantron ka prayog siddhaprad hote hain.

samast mantron ke udbhavakatrta shiv ko mantron ka janak mana jata hai. atah kisi bhi mantra ka jap rudraksh ki mala par karen, to behatar parinam sammukh aenge. jyotish ke prangan men bhi mantron ka mahatva sarvopri hai. jab kisi jatak ki kundli men kisi aise grah ki kamjori dekhi jati hai, jis grah ka ratn dharan nahin ho sakta hai, to aisi sthiti men mantra jap hi labh pradan karta hai.

shabd ke isi prabhav ke karan mantron ko sarvopri mana gaya hai. shraddha evan vishvaspurvak kiya gaya mantra jap, athva mantra path jatak ko nishchay hi labh deta hai.
